Artist’s Note:
While painting, I couldn’t stop thinking about the years between the son’s leaving and his return.
Scripture only gives us a few verses.
I imagined time keeping company with them both.
It sat beside the father.
And walked beside the son.We are told he squandered everything.
Then:
“He came to himself.”
That sentence probably represents many months.
There were hundreds of mornings and evenings before they met at this moment where the father ran to embrace his son.
Embedded Scripture
Throughout the painting are fragments of Scripture layered beneath the paint.
Some are obviously visible.
Others are mostly lost beneath months of brushstrokes.
Among the passages are Psalm 51, David’s prayer of repentance, and others that are woven into the son’s clothing.
Collection
The Company of Time remains in the artist’s personal collection as part of an ongoing biblical series.
While the painting is not for sale, it is shared in support of Jerusalem Light and the discipleship work taking place in Jerusalem.
